The Data Bank Criminalist processes DNA samples collected from qualified persons and submitted by California law enforcement agencies in accordance with applicable state law, develops DNA profiles from these samples, and imports the DNA profiles to the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) where they are searched against DNA profiles from evidence from unsolved crimes. The Criminalist performs routine technical duties but may be assigned to assist Senior Criminalists with specialized duties and projects within the Data Bank Program. The Senior Criminalist classification is a journey level position. The Data Bank Senior Criminalist processes DNA samples collected from qualified persons and submitted by California law enforcement agencies in accordance with applicable state law, develops DNA profiles from these samples, and imports the DNA profiles to the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) where they are searched against DNA profiles from evidence from unsolved crimes. The Data Bank Senior Criminalist may be assigned to provide technical training to entry-level Criminalists, serve as an operational area coordinator or in a specialized unit, and participate in troubleshooting and validation and other specialized projects within the Data Bank Program. Position Title: Criminalist II Agency/Company: County of Santa Clara Location: San Jose, CA Listing closes on: 11/12/2024 About the position: Description: Under supervision, to perform physical, chemical, biological and/or digital analyses related to scientific examination of physical evidence in criminal cases. The County of Santa Clara District Attorney’s Crime Laboratory is recruiting for two (2) Criminalist II positions. One position specializes in DNA analysis. The incumbent will perform chemical, biochemical and molecular genetic analysis on evidence samples for the purpose of identification and genetic characterization of physiological fluids and other human biological materials using serological and amplification-based DNA typing techniques. The other position specializes in Toxicology. The incumbent will perform laboratory examinations on human physiological samples to determine blood alcohol content, presumptive and confirmatory presence of blood or urine drugs, manage the evidentiary breath alcohol program, and testify to the effects of alcohol and drugs in court. The current vacancies are located in the District Attorney’s Office; however, the list may be used for future vacancies as they occur. Selected candidates must successfully pass a full background investigation prior to appointment. Employment Standards: Training and Experience Note: Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in a natural or applied science, or a related field; AND Two (2) years of criminalist experience. A Master’s Degree, or higher, in a natural or applied science or related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the required general experience. An incumbent must possess the minimum qualifications for the discipline assigned as defined by the Laboratory’s current accrediting body as well as applicable requirements as set by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Quality Assurance Standards and the California Code of Regulations. Possession of a valid California Driver’s License prior to appointment and the ability to obtain and maintain a County driver’s authorization.
